SKD Writing Award Guidelines and Submission Links

*Deadline for Writing Award Entries – November 15, 2023*
Submissions are accepted from active ΣΚΔ members only.*
 
Each entry must be submitted separately. Each member may submit up to three poems and three prose works**. Prose manuscripts should not exceed 2,500 words, and literary analyses should include no secondary sources.

One electronic version (.doc format only) of the entry must be uploaded into the Awards/Scholarship Submission portal. 

The guidelines for the electronic submission are spelled out below.
 
  • The electronic version must be in .doc format (.pdf format will not be accepted). DO NOT identify yourself on any page of the submission.
  • The Word Document (.doc format) electronic copy must be typed (Times New Roman/12 Font), double-spaced with one-inch margins.
  • Literary analyses must follow the format and documentation style defined in the latest edition of MLA. A works cited page must be included in the submission. Since a literary analysis is a close reading of a work and not a research paper, submissions using secondary sources will be disqualified.
  • DO NOT identify yourself in any way on any page of the submitted text.
  • Each entry must be submitted separately.
  • You will be required during the submission process to initial a waiver form indicating that no previous copyrighted publication of the work(s) has occurred, you did not commit plagiarism, and granting the editors of Hedera helix the right to edit your work for correctness and style.
  • Prose manuscripts should not exceed 2500 words.
  • All applicants must be an active SKD member*.

*Active ΣΚΔ members are defined as students currently enrolled in 100/200 level classes who are actively seeking an associate’s degree in the academic year in which the prize is awarded. Alumni members are not eligible.

**Prose works are literary analysis, short fiction, and personal essay. Members may only submit a total of three prose works in any combination. For example, a member may submit three short fiction entries; or two short fiction and one literary analysis; or one short fiction, one personal essay, and one literary analysis. Only the first three entries submitted by a member will be accepted for judging.
