Annual Awards & Scholarships

Winners will be announced at the National Convention, Las Vegas, NV, March 25, 2019. Winners do not need to be present to win.
Sigma Kappa Delta offers a variety of annual opportunities for individual
as well as chapter awards and scholarships.

Individual Awards
Applications for the 2019/2020 academic year must be postmarked by November 15, 2019.

These awards are open to active SKD members only.

Active ΣΚΔ members are defined as students currently enrolled in 100/200 level classes who are actively seeking an associate’s degree in the academic year in which the prize is awarded. Alumni members are not eligible.

 

Writing Awards

Sigma Kappa Delta sponsors an annual writing competition for members currently enrolled in a two-year college. First, second, and third place winners are recognized in the categories of Poetry, Short Fiction, Personal Essay, and Literary Analysis. Winners will receive a monetary award (First: $200, Second: $150, Third: $100) as well as the privilege of being published in the national literary journal.

Photography Awards

Sigma Kappa Delta sponsors an annual black and white photography competition for members currently enrolled in a two-year college. First, second and third place winners are recognized and will receive a monetary award (First: $100, Second: $50, Third: $25) as well as the privilege of being published in the national literary journal.

Chapter Activity Award

 

Sigma Kappa Delta awards $200 to the chapter whose chapter activity best promotes the aims of the society locally or nationally. The activity should have occurred within eighteen months prior to the application date. 

 

Chapter Literary Magazine/Journal Award

Sigma Kappa Delta awards $200 to the chapter who submits the best Literary Magazine or Journal from its school. Entries in the journal are not limited to SKD members; however, the SKD chapter must have actively participated in creating and publishing the journal.

Sigma Tau Delta Transfer Scholarship*

 

The Dr. William C. Johnson Sigma Tau Delta Transfer Scholarship

Funded by our sister organization, Sigma Tau Delta, this $1,000 cash award goes to a transferring SKD member who is pursuing a degree in English or English Education from a four-year college. The winner should use the award to defray costs of education. The Board of Directors bases selection on the criteria for Academic and Service Awards as well as the goals indicated by the student in his or her autobiographical essay.

Sigma Kappa Delta Service Scholarships*

Sigma Kappa Delta offers cash awards of $750 to members of Sigma Kappa Delta members who are actively involved in the chapter during the semester of application. Each winner may use the scholarship award as s/he chooses. There are four service scholarships available

The Dr. Don Perkins Service Scholarship

The Dr. Don Perkins Service Scholarship honors one of the founding fathers of Sigma Kappa Delta and the first advisor of the first chapter of SKD, Alpha Chapter at Cottey College in Nevada, Missouri. This scholarship awards $750.

The Dr. Susan LeJeune Service Scholarship

The Dr. Susan LeJeune Service Scholarship memorializes the first national Sigma Kappa Delta president and first advisor of Beta Alpha Chapter at Louisiana State University at Eunice. This scholarship awards $750.

 

The Dr. Sheila H. Byrd Service Scholarship

The Dr. Sheila H. Byrd Service Scholarship honors the longest serving National Executive Director of Sigma Kappa Delta.  This scholarship awards $750.

 

The Professor Joan Reeves Service Scholarship

 

The Professor Joan Reeves Service Scholarship honors the longest serving National President of Sigma Kappa Delta. This scholarship awards $750.

 

*Two separate packages must be submitted if applying for both the Transfer Scholarship and the Service Scholarships.*

Any member of Sigma Kappa Delta may submit papers to Sigma Tau Delta for inclusion into the annual conference and STD’s annual writing awards. Please see Sigma Tau Delta’s convention website page (http://englishconvention.org/) for categories, guidelines, and submission dates. 

 

Sigma Kappa Delta Best Convention Paper Award

To be eligible for this award, the paper must meet all submission guidelines for convention papers and be accepted by STD for presentation at the annual convention.
